Companion Dog Obedience is a 10 week intensive group class teaching you to train your dog to the Novice level (Companion Dog) as set forth by the AKC.
The class will run for 10 consecutive weeks on Thursday nights. Classes will begin at 6:30pm sharp and will run 60 to 90 minutes each week. During this course please expect to dedicate 30-60 minutes a day 6 days a week for 10 weeks to your homework. In this course we will teach obedience skills all dogs should have. All dogs need to be 6 months or older unless approved by the instructor. We ask that anyone with dogs that show a propensity for aggression towards other dogs or humans contact us prior to enrolling (other training options may be recommended).
By the end of this course, your dog should be able to:
Calmly and politely walk at heel - to get you in and out of places where you can take your dog
Stand for exam – as a common courtesy to the vet, groomer, and for yourself when it comes time to need to clip or grind toenails, brush the dog, clean the teeth, check him for fleas and ticks, or wipe off those muddy paws.
Off-leash heeling – for those casual moments when you need control, but don’t have a leash handy.
Sit-stay - for when you need to leave the dog behind to go handle something in view or out of view.
Down-stay – for when you need to leave him to attend to some necessity (like a getting groceries out of the car or to assist someone you may meet while you are out, or to sit down at an outside pub and have a meal or beverage.)
Come when called - who doesn't need their dog to come when called?
At the conclusion all students will be tested on the last night of class. We train to the "measurable standard" of the American Kennel Club's Beginner Novice test. The test we conduct is a "fun run" and does not take the place of AKC sanctioned obedience trial.
This course can be repeated free of charge so long as you have met all homework and attendance requirements and we have space in the class. Should you miss a class, fall behind, or need extra help a make up session can be scheduled for an additional fee that is discounted from our normal private lesson fees.
This course will include practical instruction both in person as a group as well as online in a closed group for students only. All REQUIRED homework will be submitted by video to private Facebook group for critique by the trainer. There will be a "Readiness Test" each week to ensure you are ready to move on to the next lesson.
What is offered in this class "if you do the work" is FAR above any group class in the area.
The FIRST night of class is WITHOUT your dog.
Cost will be $500 and will include all necessary training equipment to get started. There are no refunds once the course has begun. If you have successfully completed our Beginner Novice class you can enroll in this class (with the same dog) and receive a $100 discount!
*** You will need a smart phone for homework video purposes and optionally a cheap tripod if no helper is available to assist.
***Access to a desktop or laptop computer with internet is HIGHLY suggested.
***We HIGHLY suggest students purchase a book that goes along with the method we are teaching which the "digital version" can be purchased through Amazon for only $2.99.
***There will be a few inexpensive items needed in the second half of the course. These will need to be acquired by you at any local hardware store. Instructions will be provided at the appropriate time.
Important:
If you have mobility or health issues PLEASE CONTACT us before enrolling to make sure this class is the right choice for you. There will be parts of the training of your dog in this curriculum that can be challenging physically. Other program options may be better suited if mobility is a concern.
While we encourage all family members to get involved in the training but we require ONE primary student "in class" and that student to be a minimum of 18 years of age.
